Trusting the Process: How Growth Transforms Us

Trusting the Process: How Growth Transforms Us

Impatience is real when you start to learn something new. I can’t count the times I’ve stepped into something unfamiliar—a new career, a new job, a new hobby—only to expect myself to master it immediately. And when that doesn’t happen, self-limiting thoughts creep in. Maybe I’m not good enough. Maybe this isn’t for me.

Sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it? Yet, I’ve fallen into that trap many times, missing out on the beauty of growth and the joy of evolving. But here’s the truth: stepping into new opportunities isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress. Growth is messy, nonlinear, and often filled with doubts and detours, but when we embrace the journey, we open ourselves to transformation.

The Science of Growth and Learning

Psychologists call this the growth mindset, a term coined by Dr. Carol Dweck. Her research shows that people who believe abilities can be developed through effort and persistence are more likely to embrace challenges and persevere through setbacks. In contrast, a fixed mindset—where people believe their abilities are static—leads to avoidance of challenges and fear of failure.

Neuroscience backs this up. The brain’s neuroplasticity means that with practice and effort, new neural pathways form, making learning and skill development possible at any stage of life. Studies have shown that even in adulthood, the brain continues to rewire itself in response to new experiences and learning. In essence, we are never truly stuck—we are always capable of change.

Embracing the Process: My Journey

Over three and a half years ago, I took a leap of faith and transitioned from a 30+ year career in marketing, PR, and communications into life coaching. I had completed my Master of Leadership and felt a deep pull to help others step into the best version of themselves.

But I was starting from scratch. I had never built a coaching business before. I was eager but inexperienced, excited yet uncertain. Then, one day, my first client found me. She had heard that I was starting my life coaching business and came up to me, asking if I would take her on as a client. I looked at her, dumbfounded, and replied, “Are you sure?” It was a moment of both disbelief and realization—someone saw value in what I had to offer before I fully did myself.

Slowly but surely, I built my business. It took time, lessons learned, confidence built, and a shift in perspective—from expecting instant success to embracing the journey of progress. The more I learned, the more I grew, and the more I understood that growth isn’t about reaching a destination—it’s about showing up, learning, and refining as you go.

Looking back, my journey wasn’t linear—it was filled with challenges, moments of self-doubt, and unexpected pivots. But what stayed constant was my commitment to growth. I had to trust the process, just as I now guide my clients to do.

Seeing Growth in Real Time

One of the most striking realizations of my evolution came during my recent branding photoshoot—my third one. Looking back at my first shoot, I saw the joy of new beginnings. The second, two years later, captured a more refined version of me—still playful but with growth evident. And my latest? A confident woman who knows who she is, the impact she makes, and the deep belief she holds in herself and her work.

This transformation wasn’t just about my external image—it reflected internal growth. The fears, the uncertainties, the doubts—they didn’t disappear overnight, but they lost their power as I continued to trust the process.

The Reality of Growth: Lessons for Clients (and Ourselves)

Many of my clients come into coaching wanting immediate change. They want to break habits, rewire their thinking, and shift self-limiting beliefs overnight. But change doesn’t work that way.

As the saying goes, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Growth requires:

  • Commitment – Choosing growth over comfort, even when it’s hard.
Courage – Facing the discomfort of change.
Persistence – Staying the course despite setbacks.
Awareness – Understanding the why behind behaviours before shifting them.
Incremental action – Taking small, consistent steps in the right direction.

Practical Steps for Embracing Growth

  1. Adopt a Growth Mindset – When challenges arise, remind yourself, I’m learning, and that’s enough for today.
  2. Reframe Setbacks – Instead of seeing them as failures, view them as learnings. Each mistake teaches us something valuable.
  3. Celebrate Progress – Recognize milestones along the way. Growth isn’t linear, but every step forward matters.
  4. Surround Yourself with Encouragement – Seek out a coach, books, or communities that reinforce the belief that you can evolve.
  5. Take Consistent Action – Small steps compound over time. Success is in the daily choices.
  6. Practice Self-Compassion – Growth isn’t about perfection. Be kind to yourself in the process.

The Beauty of Becoming

If I could go back and tell my younger self anything, it would be this: Growth takes time, but the process is where the magic happens. Each phase—every success, every struggle—shapes us into the people we’re meant to be. Every setback holds a lesson, every challenge is an opportunity, and every step forward matters.

So, whatever new thing you’re stepping into, trust the journey. Growth isn’t about arriving—it’s about evolving, learning, and becoming. And that is the most beautiful part of it all.
